7 Natural Remedies for You and Your Little Ones

The weather is getting cooler where we live in California. It’s time to take better care of ourselves and our loved ones as Winter is around the corner. Many of us tend to get under the weather as we transition to cold Winter months. “Prevention is better than cure”- especially when you’ve many responsibilities as a mom, you don’t seem to have enough time to fully recuperate cold and sniffles.

At Simplymuslim home we rely on Allah’s(swt) blessings in natural remedies. These remedies are derived from nature and have been in use for hundreds, if not thousands of years. They are easy on your body with no harmful side effects alhamdulillah.

Our medicine cabinet is comprised of the following remedies-

Elderberry syrup-

Elderberry syrup is our favorite remedy to prevent and heal from seasonal colds, flus and sniffles. I also use it as a preventative method when a viral bug is going around or at the onset of a fever or cold. This syrup is great to improve and heal your immune system since it’s full of a number of vitamins including vitamin A and C. This powerhouse berry is high in flavonoids and improves other ailments like nerve pain, inflammation, chronic fatigue, allergies and constipation. My kids love the berry taste that’s without any artificial flavor and color.

You can make your own elderberry syrup using fresh or dried elderberries-

  • 1/2 cup dried elderberries
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1/4 cup of honey
  • 1/4 tsp of ginger powder or thinly sliced ginger root
  1. Pour water into a saucepan, add elderberries and ginger.
  2. Bring to a boil and then simmer until the liquid has reduced by half.
  3. When the mix is cool enough to handle, mash the berries with a stainless steel spatula or serving spoon. Do not use a blender as it will break up the bitter little seeds. Do not use plastic utensils either.
  4. Strain the mixture using a fine mesh sieve or a tea strainer to catch the seeds and the pulp.
  5. Pour the liquid into a clean glass jar.
  6. Let the liquid cool completely and then add the honey. Stir well.
  7. Compost the elderberry pulp.

Keep the syrup chilled in your fridge for use up to 7 days. After 7 days, freeze the rest in an ice-cube tray and then keep the iced syrup cubes in a glass container for later use. Take out as needed and thaw before use. Do not reheat or microwave

We take 1 tsp of this syrup, 2-3 times a day, 2-3 days or as needed.

Don’t have time to make syrup? We have used store-bought syrup and greatly benefited from them alhamdulillah.. Our favorite is Nature’s Answer Elderberry extract (alcohol free).

Nature's Answer Alcohol-Free Sambucus Black Elder Berry Extract, 8-Fluid Ounces

Echinacea is a native North American plant that was used as a traditional herbal remedy by Native Americans. We use it as a tincture to boost our immune system and to stave off cold/flu symptoms. We like the alcohol free tincture for our family. You can also find a Echinacea blend in health food stores that are as effective as the single herb tincture. We are currently using Kid’s Echinacea Plus from Sprouts Farmers Market.

As muslim parents we are all aware of the benefits of honey and its many uses. I always keep good honey on hand and make us of the BOGO sales whenever they’re around at the local stores. Occasionally, if I want to use local honey to get used to the local pollen, I would get them from the local farmers market. Local honey help to reduce mild allergy symptoms. We use honey in our food to improve our immune system, mix it with water and drink it and have used it as a salve for burn. The best things is that you get to earn sunnah rewards with all your honey uses.

Black seed oil-

Like honey, we keep a bottle of black seed oil handy to keep our family’s health in check. This amazing sunnah remedy works wonders for preventing and healing evil eye issues, magic of all sorts and waswasa/negative thoughts. We take about 1/8- 1/4 tea-spoon as this is a very potent oil and your stomach needs to get used to the strength of this great remedy. This oil can be also used topically for all kinds of skin concerns, acne to athlete’s foot. You can apply it under your feet at the onset of cold and flu and your symptoms will ameliorate insha Allah.

Zamzam water-

A medicine cabinet would be incomplete without Zamzam water. We use it for all kinds of ailments. A little splash on your face and on top of your head is great to calm you down from anxiety/stress or lift you up if you’re stuck in a funk. Drink it to distance yourself from shaitan when it tries to overwhelm you. We even give it our pets when they are not feeling well and it works like a charm every time alhamdulillah. Keep a bottle handy and use sparingly if it’s not readily available in your area. Keep adding clean water so it lasts longer insha Allah.

Calendula cream-

This homeopathy remedy is our to go first aid cream. We use this for scraps, bug bites, minor burn or cuts and bruises etc. I get this from my homeopath who also sells it on Amazon. I keep a travel size version of this in my first aid to go bag.

Calendula Officinalis Cream 1 pack

Ruta Graveolens Cream

This is our go to pain remedy for all kinds of aches and pains. This remedy does wonders for minor and major pains alike, to alleviate growing pain, carpal tunnel, back/neck/shoulder pain etc. I carry a travel size version of this one as well.

Both of these creams last a long time, a little goes a long way alhamdulillah.

Practice caution when it comes to use any remedy. Don’t jump on the band wagon of using something just because it showed up on your Facebook with many likes or it’s trending on Pinterest or Instagram. Don’t use any remedy without doing your research and then make an informed decision that’s right for your family. Do not use large amount of remedies just because it’s natural. These remedies are potent and a little goes a long way alhamdulillah.

And please remember to ask As Shafi for complete and lasting cure.

  1. I felt guilty as a muslim mom for not having any handy remedy/medicines at home when winter comes aside from honey. I did get terribly sick last month with our son too who is the most pitiful one since he’s just 3 yrs. old. I’ll make sure next time to do some precautions also. It was a lesson learnt indeed.
